'Rust' Player Data Completely Lost In Massive EU Server Fire

'Rust' Player Data Completely Lost In Massive EU Server Fire

Awful news.

Earlier today a massive fire broke out at the OVH Datacenter in Strasbourg, one of the largest cloud service firms in Europe.

Fortunately everybody was successfully evacuated during the blaze and no major injuries have been reported, but the fire did manage to completely destroy one of the buildings, taking a a number of servers with it. The result? A large amount of player data for the multiplayer survival game Rust has been completely lost, and will not be able to be restored.

"We've confirmed a total loss of the affected EU servers during the OVH datacentre fire," Rust developer Facepunch wrote. "We're now exploring replacing the affected servers. Data will be unable to be restored." Earlier today the studio confirmed that around 25 EU servers had been lost.

U.S News reports that the OVH fire started just after midnight, taking out one of the four datacentres entirely and damaging another. The company confirmed that the remaining two were shut down to prevent any further damage. It's currently unclear exactly how the fire started.

"We don't have access to the site. That is why SBG1, SBG3, SBG4 won't be restarted today," founder and chairman Octave Klaba, boss of OVH, explained on Twitter.

Microsoft cybersecurity analyst Kevin Beaumont also shared footage of the building before and after the fire (thanks, Eurogamer).

There's no word yet on how or if this incident will affect Facepunch's plans to bring Rust to consoles. The massively popular survival game, which first entered Steam Early Access way back in 2013, was finally poised to arrive on consoles with cross-play support after a seven-year wait this spring. For now, we imagine the developer's priority is on doing what it can for the players impacted by this loss of data.

We'll update this story as we learn m
