Non-playable characters are the backbone of many games. Without them, you wouldn't find quests, conversation, or combat and those are all incredibly important parts of your gaming experience. There are also those NPCs that mill around when you're swerving and screeching around Los Santos in Grand Theft Auto V and then you misjudge a turn, hit one and well, the police get involved. It's a whole thing.

Those accidentally dead NPCs who are just minding their own business are the type of NPCs that Ryan Reynolds will play in Free Guy. The ones you forget about and inconvenience, thinking they're just code so it doesn't matter if you hit them with your car. The film will follow Guy as he finds out that his entire world is a video game and there isn't much he can do about it, apart from being the good guy.

A real life gamer, played by Jodie Comer, catches Guy's attention as a love interested and then things get a little complicated. Throw in Taika Waititi and Joe Keery, and you've got yourself a blockbuster film. There will also be some gaming focused personalities to spot in the film as you go. We know, for example, Sean 'Jacksepticeye' McLouglin, Tyler 'Ninja' Blevins, and Imane 'Pokimane' Anys are all set to make appearances in the movie. It'll be like playing a game of Where's Wally? but for gaming influencers.

The trailer shows us that eventually the relationship between Comer and Reynolds transforms into Guy 'ruining' Free City by doing good in the world - players are no longer free to wreak havoc and so the developers attempt to delete Guy instead. Who knows what happens next?

Free Guy is set to release this December, however with everything going on, that date is a little touch and go - we'll be keeping an eye on how cinema situations develop in the coming months.
