Sam Wilson is officially Captain America. While this won't come as a shock to anyone who tuned in to finale of The Falcon And The Winter Soldier on Disney Plus, Marvel has now replaced all promotional images of Steve Rogers in the stars and stripes on social media with Wilson in his striking new costume.
The official Captain America Facebook and Twitter pages have removed Rogers from their banner images and put the new Cap in his place. It's a small touch, but a welcome acknowledgement from Marvel that Wilson very much is the MCU's Star Spangled Avenger going forward, and that future projects will continue to document the former Falcon's adventures with the iconic shield. Sorry, John Walker.
Take a look at the new poster below. I honestly can't get enough of that comic-accurate costume.
So what's next for the new Captain America? According to The Hollywood Reporter, the minds behind The Falcon And The Winter Soldier are officially working on Captain America 4 for the big screen. The new film will, of course, star Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, although no other details are known at this time. We can probably assume Sebastian Stan will return as Bucky; he as unfinished business with Sam's sister.
Whether or not Chris Evans will make one last appearance as Steve Rogers remains to be seen. It's rumoured he will come back, but in a separate project to Captain America 4. Here's hoping we get to see Steve returning the Infinity Stones.
As far as the plot of the next Captain America goes... well, there are plenty of routes it could take following the end of The Falcon And The Winter Soldier. John Walker's transformation into US Agent certainly hints at the arrival of The Thunderbolts/Dark Avengers, and it'd be interesting to see Cap and Bucky tangle with a team of less savoury anti-heroes (and a few straight-up villains).
We'll have to wait and see for now, but one thing is clear: there's a new Captain America in town, and he's not going anywhere.
