Spiral: From the Book of Saw is yet to hit the silver screen, however, it's been reported that a tenth film is in the works with one of the original producers back on board the historic horror franchise.

The information comes from the latest issue of Production Weekly, which claims to be the "industry's leading source for tracking upcoming film and TV production data." Sure as eggs is eggs, Saw 10 is listed amongst a slew of upcoming projects, and it is said to be in "active development" in Toronto, Canada. This was spotted by Bloody Disgusting, and as Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures have not stated anything about a possible new entry to the series, the discovery has caused quite the stir with horror buffs. It also shows that the companies have confidence in Spiral: From the Book of Saw even before it begins to rake in the cash when it releases next month.

The premise of the spinoff is that someone has become enamoured with the legacy of the Jigsaw Killer and is attempting to emulate those sadistic murders that stained the city's past. Detective Ezekiel "Zeke" Banks and his partner Detective William Schenk (played by Chris Rock and Max Minghella respectively) must race against the clock to unmask the criminal, however, there's a twist in the tale. It's possible that the killer has a personal connection to Zeke, and it might be to do with his estranged ex-cop father, Marcus (played by Samuel L. Jackson.)

Funnily enough, the story arose from a chance conversation at a wedding between Rock and Joe Drake, CEO of Lionsgate. The pitch was "completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise," and as a result, viewers will expect Spiral: From the Book of Saw to cut back on the gore and use tension and fear to generate empathy for the characters and their fates. Director Darren Lynn Bousman described how gore and violence is the trademark of the core entries to the series, whereas this will attempt to change tack.

So, if a spinoff would tone down the things that make a quintessential Saw film, we would anticipate that Saw 10 will put blood and guts back on the menu. Daniel Heffner, Mark Burg, Oren Koules, James Wan, and Leigh Whannell are listed as producers, and the latter two are the original creators of the series. Jigsaw, which was released in 2017, wasn't a hit with critics but it's possible that the creative leaps taken with Spiral: From the Book of Saw has refreshed what could come next from the streets of the city. We'll let you know as and when we know more.
