Season 2 Of ‘The Witcher’ Reveals More About The Series’ Villains

Something wicked this way comes…

The characters of Cahir (or, ahem, Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach, to give the fella his full name) and Fringilla Vigo sure were there in season one of The Witcher, which arrived on Netflix in late 2019. But if you'd already read some of the show's inspirational books, or played the games that were based on those novels and short stories, you'll have maybe thought: hey, those guys are worth more screen time than this.

Well, if there's no maybe about that thought when it comes to your reaction to The Witcher - which is some very good telly, BTW - then you're in luck. Showrunner Lauren S Hissrich has tweeted that the forthcoming second season, expected in 2021 but let's be patient (right?), will dig into these important characters a lot more.

"I can't wait to dig deeper into Cahir and Fringilla in S2," she posts, continuing: "who they are, why Nilfgaard is important to them, and where they'll go from here." She adds that the development of these characters is "one of my favourite parts of the new season".

Now I'm not certain on how much more I want to go into this, for fear of not just season one spoilers for The Witcher, but also spoilers for the much bigger picture of this hit fantasy franchise. So let's tip-toe a little. And if you don't want to know anything about these characters, click away now.

Cahir in The Witcher /
Netflix

We were introduced to Cahir, played by Eamon Farren, in season one as the Black Knight or Black Rider, with feathers in his helmet. He really seemed like a Bad Egg, as he pursued Ciri seemingly on the behest of the Nilfgaardian Empire, ostensibly the series' primary antagonists. Obviously, obviously, there's more to it than that. And to cut to the chase, kinda: Cahir isn't quite as bad as the first season makes out. Epiphanies are a thing. I'll leave that, there.

As for Fringilla, a fairly significant supporting character in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and played in the Netflix show by Mimi Ndiweni, she's a sorceress who trains beside co-lead protagonist Yennefer of Vengerberg. We see this pair drift onto opposite sides of a continent-spanning conflict across the course of season one - Fringilla becoming the sorceress assigned to Nilfgaard, and Yennefer ultimately aligning with a resistance also including Tissaia de Vries and Sabrina Glevissig. Ergo, again, she's a baddie.

Fringilla in The Witcher /
Netflix

And again, there's more to it than that. If you've played The Witcher 3's Blood & Wine DLC, you'll know about the region of Toussaint - and, eventually, it's to this pleasant, wine-rich location that Fringilla travels and comes to call home, leaving Nilfgaard behind. (I mean, Toussaint is part of Nilfgaard, but you know what I mean - it's very chilled for a region under the Emperor's control.) As for what she does there, and with whom, and certain items of hers that may prove invaluable? I'll keep that under wraps, again for fear of potentially spoiling what could play out on screen in future series of Netflix's show. Although I also get the feeling that the show is going to take Fringilla in some directions that neither books nor games have, before.

In related news, a bunch of The Witcher's cast have been participating in The Great Witcher Bake Off of late - which we covered a few days ago. Seems a lot of fun (but how have they all managed to get flour?). Since then, actor Joey Batey, who plays Jaskier (aka Dandelion), has perhaps trumped all before him with a riot of a kitchen tear-up. Watch for yourself below, or here if the player's not showing for you.
