Seeing The Kvatch Oblivion Gate In Unreal Engine 5 Is Hypnotic And Haunting

I think we can all agree that as a collective, the internet is thirsty for any new Elder Scrolls content. The Elder Scrolls VI is still nowhere in sight, and it's been over seven years since the most recent instalment in the series, The Elder Scrolls Online. But, as always, you can count on the fanbase to be self-sufficient and just make new stuff themselves. It's certainly one way to guarantee seeing the content you want, I suppose.

This week, one incredibly talented fan released a video of their recreation of the iconic Kvatch Oblivion Gate from the 2006 Elder Scrolls instalment, and it's breathtaking. The user, who goes by Hall 00117, is a freelance environment artist, and created the whole thing mostly from scratch using Unreal Engine 5.

"Most of the assets used in the scene were created by me, with the exception of a few Megascanned lava rock formations, a wheelbarrow and the knight," the artist wrote in the video description. "The storm sound effects were ripped straight from Oblivion and combined into a soundscape in Unreal Engine, as was the song."

In the 2006 release, the Kvatch Oblivion Gate is the first of the gates the player encounters in their quest to seal them all, so seeing it so stunningly remastered has got nostalgic fans craving an official remake: "I'd happily pay £60 for a remaster that looks half as good as this," commented YouTube user H i. "I don't remember how many times I have replayed this timeless gem, since I have played it for the first time in 2009. So many hilarious, good, nostalgic memories with this game... I would pay [a] premium for [a] remaster like this." added Maciej R.

Unfortunately, this isn't a remaster that you can actually play, but there is currently another fan-made Oblivion remake being produced called Skyblivion, which will be playable. It doesn't currently have a release date, but the team regularly post development updates on their Twitter if you want to follow the project. It'd definitely be amazing to see an official remake of the game at some point in the future, but I'm sure for now everyone is quite happy for Bethesda to focus on The Elder Scrolls VI. We would quite like to see that one, thank you very much.
