This mod lets The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim run at 60 frames per second on the world's most powerful console, the Xbox Series X.

This seems like an odd sentence. The unit, which boasts a one terabyte SSD, a custom 12 teraflop GPU, and an eight-core custom AMD CPU, needs a helping hand to run Skyrim through backwards-compatibility. The game itself was released for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2011, and, this is actually a mod that was released for the Xbox One version. It's all a little anachronistic, but the silver lining is that Xbox Series X players will be able to enjoy the smoothness of 60fps as well as the processing power of the console breathing new life into the classic fantasy RPG.

There are some considerations to take into account, however. The mod works with the Xbox One Special Edition version of Skyrim, and Reddit user annathetravelbanana supplied a set of instructions to get it going on the Xbox Series X. Titled "Uncap FPS Mod," it's a tiny INI-file tweak (an INI is a configuration file which contains the settings of the game) which disables V-sync and deletes the 30fps limit. It apparently doesn't clash with any other performance mods that the player installs, but it does disable achievements (though there is a way around this).

annathetravelbanana also mentions that they haven't tried the mod with the Xbox Series S. Nevertheless, the similarities between the consoles would likely mean that it works in the same way. And, the results are getting rave reviews, with one commenter stating that the difference in performance is "excellent," and another asking the modder to code a mod for the PlayStation 5. In fact, Bethesda's Todd Howard has expressed the value that modding brings to its titles, and how its new technologies will push the envelope on the next-gen gizmos.

"There are things we do that we still like, the way we build our worlds, the way people can mod it - these are things I think are fundamentally good about our tech stack," he said in a fireside chat earlier this month, and explained how modders play a "part of the vibe where, from the get go, a game feels endless." Additionally, the studio's shiny new engine will let it create games on a scale that simply wasn't possible before.

"The overhaul on our engine is probably the largest we've ever had, maybe even larger than Morrowind to Oblivion," said Howard. "From rendering to animation to pathing to procedural generation... I don't want to say everything, but it's a significant overhaul. It's taken us longer than we would have liked, but it's going to power everything we're doing with Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6."
