The Best 'Skyrim' Mod Has Been Made Into A Standalone Game

A mod so good it's an entirely new game.

Mods are an amazing thing. Fans go from enjoying the work of developers to imagining what they could do with the tech they've been provided and sometimes that process reaps excellent rewards. Mods can be as small as changing a little texture here and there, loading in someone else's save file, or even just fixing a bug that the developers haven't gotten to yet. Other times, mods are so large they're basically a whole new game, which is what happened with The Forgotten City.

You may have already come across The Forgotten City as it's been in development for a long while now. Although it started simply as a Skyrim mod, it has officially launched as its very own separate game and the reviews of it are good - very good in fact.

Here is the trailer for The Forbidden City....

As Eurogamer notes, The Forgotten City was originally a mod for Skyrim that took Nick James Pearce over 1700 hours to create. It was a huge success and is seen as perhaps the best mod available for the game as it was an entirely new title, just using Bethesda's assets and engine. After the mod's success, it was honestly only a matter of time before a fully-fledged release of the title, which has just happened.

Avid Elder Scrolls fans might already know the premise of The Forgotten City but in case you've missed it, here is the description from the Steam page: "Travel 2,000 years into the past and relive the final days of a cursed Roman city, where if one person sins, everyone dies. Unravel the mystery at the city's heart by exploiting its deadly time loop, questioning locals, exploring, and solving puzzles. The fate of the city is in your hands."

It's the sort of story where you have to listen and learn from the events around you to get a good idea of what can go wrong to prevent a catastrophe. If you're interested in checking The Forgotten City it's now available on Steam, Epic Games, GOG, Xbox Series, Xbox One, PS4 and PS5.
