With details on the forthcoming sequel to 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog movie still fairly thin on the ground, we're liable to jump on any morsel that gives us just the slightest steer of what could be in store for SEGA's famously fast-of-feet mascot, and his pal Tails. And this, reader, is one such morsel.
We do know that Tails the two-tailed fox is in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - just as he was in the 1992 game, too. (And surely, surely, the pun of Miles Prower makes sense to everyone by now, right?) That was given away at the end of the first movie. We also know that Knuckles the echidna, introduced in 1994's Sonic the Hedgehog 3 game, will be making an appearance; and that the movie will release in April 2022. But until now, we didn't really have an idea about the sequel's story. Some incredibly light spoilers, inevitably, follow. As is the nature of any synopsis.

A keen-eyed Twitter user by the handle of @Ninja_Risu has given us an insight into the plot of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, courtesy of a peek at the film's publicly available copyright registration. The project's anticipated completion date is February 2022 - which tracks for an April release, and we know primary filming has already wrapped - with work stated as beginning on March 15 this year. And then there's the description of the work, which is where we get a lil suggestion of its synopsis.
The description reads as follows: "After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home when they go on vacation. But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilisations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands."
Knuckles was introduced to players as a baddie in Sonic 3, so this feels perfectly in line with the Sonic games of the past. The same game introduces the Master Emerald, a powerful stone that Knuckles (the sole surviving member of his own civilisation) is the guardian of - and again, there's surely parallels there, between movie and game.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will again star Jim Carrey as Robotnik, James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as Sonic's guardians (I guess) Tom and Maddie, and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic himself. The voice talent for Tails and Knuckles is yet to be revealed, but there's a rumour going around that Jason Momoa is keen on the latter part. Distributed by Paramount, the movie should arrive in cinemas on April 8, 2022 - and you can find our review of the first film, here.
