Jason Momoa, well known for his role as Aquaman in Batman v Superman and Justice League, is apparently in the running to play Knuckles in Sonic The Hedgehog 2.
Sonic The Hedgehog was a box office success in 2020, setting the record for the biggest opening weekend for a video game movie in the United States and Canada and raking in almost $320 million worldwide. It had bucked the trend of lacklustre video game adaptations, and it was obvious that it would become a franchise. Only months after the movie was released, James Marsden had said he is signed on for multiple sequels to Sonic The Hedgehog, and Ben Schwartz described the sequel's script as "awesome." The project is apparently in pre-production with filming to begin in May, and if this new rumour is verifiable, it confirms that Knuckles the Echidna might be played by Jason Momoa.
Knuckles will have a "prominent role" in the next chapter of Sonic's story, says The Illuminerdi. This is also the same site that claimed Keanu Reeves has been offered the role of Kraven the Hunter, a big bad in the Spider-Man world, in his own solo movie. This checks out with the appearance of Pachacamac (the leader of Knuckles' tribe in the games) at the very beginning of the movie, and the assurance that Tails will be accompanying Sonic on their adventure.
Knuckles, Tails, and Sonic met when the former tried to stop the duo from interrupting Dr. Robotnik's plan to re-launch the Death Egg, believing that they were going to steal the Master Emerald. When it was revealed that the villain had tricked Knuckles, then the trio of characters teamed up, and the rest is history.
Sonic The Hedgehog co-writer Pat Casey had expressed that the next movie could explore the Chaos Emeralds, and as Knuckles is the guardian of the Master Emerald, this tallies with the echidna arriving on the scene in the sequel. Knuckles will be "serious in nature, but still gullible at times," just like the games, and honestly, Jason Momoa is an inspired casting if this report passes muster. According to The Illuminerdi, Paramount Pictures is waiting for a call from Momoa, so we'll keep you in the loop when we know more.
SEGA and Netflix recently revealed that there is a new Sonic The Hedgehog animated series in the works, arriving in 2022. Sonic Prime is a 3D animated show, and boasts talent from Ben 10 and Big Hero 6, developing 24 episodes aimed at young audiences and lifelong fans. It'll be "a high-octane adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse rests in his gloved hands," said Wild Brain Studio. "Sonic's adventure is about more than a race to save the universe, it's a journey of self-discovery and redemption."
