Despite most of us bracing for an absolute dumpster fire, Sonic The Hedgehog movie ended up being one of the best and brightest surprises of 2020. The live-action adventure flick was an absolute delight, and fans are already eagerly anticipating the sequel, which was announced just a few months back and is set to pit Jim Carrey's devilish Robotnik against Ben Schwartz's cheeky Sonic once more.

The good news is that things are moving forward speedily. Tika Sumpter, who is set to return as Maddie Wachowski in the sequel, confirmed in a recent interview on talkshow Live With Kelly Ryan that Sonic The Hedgehog 2 starts filming in March in Hawaii and Vancouver.

She said: "[My Daughter] is obviously obsessed with Sonic, she told me she wants to meet Sonic. And I go, 'Well, that's a problem' [laughs]. She's super excited about Sonic 2, which I'm about to start in March. So I'm excited We're shooting in Hawaii and Vancouver. But it's a huge hit in my house."

This is the first confirmation we've seen that the sequel is kicking it up a gear, but it's awesome news. As for what we can expect from Sonic's second big screen outing? Well, rumours suggest that we'll be seeing more of his friends from the video games. The first movie made the decision to keep the focus entirely on the blue blur with a very brief post-credits tease for Tails at the end, but there's talk that Knuckles the Echidna will be joining the sequel too.

A recent report from The Illuminerdi claims that Knuckles, who first showed up in 1994's excellent Sonic The Hedgehog 3, will possibly show up as an antagonist alongside Robotnik. Whether this ends up being the case remains to be seen, but Sonic fans have already been vocal about their desire to see none other than Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson cast in the role.

I can honestly say I have no horse in the "who should play Knuckles in a movie" race, but The Rock is not a bad shout. Not a bad shout at all. Meanwhile, nobody seems to give a crap about who should play Tails. I'm gonna suggest director Jeff Fowler really go against type and cast Ron Perlman as Sonic's loyal sidekick. Oscar guaranteed.
