You might remember that the original Spider-Man 3, that's the Sam Raimi-directed movie from back in 2007, was absolutely trashed by critics. Many argued at the time that Tobey Maguire's third and final outing as the wall-crawler suffered from too many characters, with Sandman, Venom, and a new Green Goblin all competing for screen time.

On a completely unrelated note, the third Tom Holland Spider-Man film has just added a number of key faces to an already massive cast. Late last night we got the exciting news from The Hollywood Reporter that Spider-Man 2 Doctor Octopus Alfred Molina had signed up for the movie. Between this and the report from a few months back that Jamie Foxx would be returning as Electro, fans have started to believe that a live-action Spider-Verse bringing together the three big-screen Spider-Men might actually be happening.

Now, Spidey fans around the world are completely losing their minds as it looks like Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and Andrew Garfield have actually signed on to join Tom Holland in a universe-hopping sequel. Maguire and Dunst are of course responsible for changing the face of superhero cinema as Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson in the original Raimi films. Andrew Garfield took on the role of Spidey in the less good Amazing Spider-Man and its even worse sequel, though he was clearly wasted in the role and absolutely deserves this second shot at a part he was obviously perfect for.

Covering the news of Molina's return, Collider wrote that "Kirsten Dunst will return as MJ" and that "Andrew Garfield will be back." The publication also said that Maguire will be back as well, if Sony and Marvel can close that deal.

As cool as this would be - and it would be very cool - it seems as if Sony and Marvel still have to go through some talks before they can make the news official. With that said, it would be incredibly surprising if these ex Spider-Men didn't come back to join Holland, giving everything we've already heard about Spider-Man 3... not least that Doctor Strange, a resident expert in multiverses, will also be appearing in the film in some capacity.

The only question now is whether or not this new Spider-Man 3 will crumble under the same weight as the original Spider-Man 3 and fail because of too many characters in the mix. Then again, if that hefty amount of characters includes Toby motherf**cking Maguire back in his iconic role, I'm not sure anyone will care that much about the plot.
