It's fair to say that there's an awful lot of hype around Spider-Man 3. The upcoming Tom Holland movie, which is not to be confused with the horrendous 2007 capper to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, is a project that very nearly didn't happen.

Fans will no doubt remember the rough few months in which it looked like Sony would be removing Holland's webhead from the Marvel Cinematic Universe completely, sparking concerns the story that kicked off all the way back in Captain America: Civil War would never be truly finished. Fortunately an agreement was struck between Sony and Marvel, and Spider-Man 3 looks set to be one of the most ambitious superhero movies to date.

That's according to Tom Holland himself, he told Variety in a recent interview that Marvel and Sony really pulled out all the stops for his third solo outing as the webbed avenger.

"I can say that it's the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made," the actor explained. "You sit down, read the script, and see what they're trying to do, and they're succeeding. It's really impressive. I've never seen a standalone superhero movie quite like it. And I'm just, you know, again, that lucky little sh-t who happens to be Spider-Man in it. We got a lot more shooting to do. We started before Christmas and shot for like seven weeks. We stopped for the Christmas break, and then we're starting again. I'm just as excited as everyone else to see it, let alone be a part of it."

Much of Spider-Man 3 remains a mystery, but various pieces of casting news have suggested that we're heading towards an epic multiverse adventure that brings together three generations of Spider-Man.

We already know that Spider-Man 2 Doctor Octopus Alfred Molina is down to return alongside Jamie Foxx, who played Electro in the not-very-good Amazing Spider-Man 2. This, coupled with the news that Benedict Cumberpatch's Doctor Strange will play a key role in the movie, makes the rumours that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are reprising their roles as Spider-Man for the project all but certain.

All three big-screen Spider-Men in one place as they do battle with some kind of interdimensional Sinister Six? Yeah, I'd say we could safely class that as the most ambitious solo superhero flick ever made. Bring on December 2021.
