'Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order' Ad Straight Up Ruins The Ending

'Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order' Ad Straight Up Ruins The Ending

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order isn't a terribly long game, but is one best experienced blind. If you're a Star Wars fan especially, you'll want to get through the 15-to-20-hour campaign and uncover the references to the past and future of the franchise for yourself. What you won't want to do, I imagine, is have one of the game's biggest and best moments spoiled for you by a Black Friday advert.

Unfortunately, that's exactly what happens towards the end of a Thanksgiving ad for the new single-player Star Wars game. The commercial, designed to promote the game on Xbox One, gives away a huge moment towards the end of the game.

Having already had this particular moment spoiled for me by some jerk's YouTube thumbnail ONE DAY after the game released, I know only too well how it feels to have had the thrill of discovering this particular encounter ripped away. Quite why someone responsible for officially marketing the game thought this would be a good idea is beyond me. Imagine if there were kids waiting until Christmas to play the game, and they saw this ad on TV over Thanksgiving?

You can check out the ad in question below or on YouTube, but please only do so if you've already finished Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Or, you know, if you just don't give a crap. That's fine too. Full disclosure, I'll also be talking about the spoiler after this paragraph, so maybe stop reading here if you don't want to know about the game's big surprise.

Okay, so Darth Vader, right? I had a lot of problems with most of Fallen Order, but running into the meanest mf in the galaxy at the end of my adventure was just... breathtaking. As a Star Wars fan, I absolutely adored the way Vader showed up and immediately proceeded to wreck Cal and his pals. No matter how good we were as Cal, even after everything (and all those remembered Force powers), we could never be a match for Lord Vader.

I loved that the only thing you could do was run for your life, because he's Darth goddamn Vader. In fact, how cool would it be to get a Star Wars survival horror game in which you play as a Rebel trapped on a space station with Vader? It'd be like the last scene in Rogue One crossed with Resident Evil 2 and Alien: Isolation.

But I'm getting off track. My point is that the Vader encounter was the best moment in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and EA/Xbox/whoever signed off on the above ad made a really dumb call when they decided to spoil that reveal. I guess showing that one of the most famous bad guys in fiction shows up in the game would be a good way to shift more copies but... come on, guys.

Maybe I'm being a bit too sensitive about it. After all, I think most of us assumed that Vader would probably appear at some point in the game? But there's speculating yourself and still being surprised, and then there's straight up being told and going through the game knowing he's going to pop up at some point.

A lot of us would probably have preferred the former, but we weren't given the choice. And that really sucks.
