‘Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’ Launches To Forcefully Strong Reviews

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is out today and the critical reception is leaning towards the warm, welcoming and recommended. So far, that is. The new game from Respawn Entertainment (Apex Legends, Titanfall), published by EA, hasn't been covered by all the major outlets just yet - but its start is positive, for sure.

This single-player action game stars Cal Kestis as one of the universe's last Jedi, at a time when the Empire has triggered Order 66 - which is not for a cheeseburger, onion rings and large fries, but represents a complete purge of the lightsaber-swinging good guys and gals. Which means it's set between movies III and IV, right? Right.

We've previewed the game extensively - check out our interview, gameplay impressions, and our main takeaways from a recent hands-on - and will have a review completed just as soon as we can.

Meantime, here's what other places have been saying about this new Star Wars adventure.

IGN awards Fallen Order 9/10, calling it a "fantastic action adventure" that "makes up for lost time" - fair enough, given the last few Star Wars games have been pretty pish. The Guardian gives the game four out of five, complimenting its "satisfying lightsaber combat" and declaring that "this is the game (Star Wars) fans have been waiting for". Aye. We all love a convenient soundbite.

GameSpot's review is an 8 out of 10, with criticism levelled at checkpoint spacing and the story's slow start, but plenty of praise generously poured over the game's "harrowing" combat (this is a tough beast on its higher difficulties) and vast maps full of exploration potential. USGamer says Fallen Order comes "painfully close to being the action game of the year", but is let down by pacing and technical issues - they award it 3.5/5.

GameInformer's review lands at 88%, stating that this "turbulent thrill ride" is "largely a success" that makes something unique out of its game-world inspirations - namely Dark Souls, Metroid Prime and Uncharted. GameSpew award it 8/10 and conclude by saying that "the Force is strong with Fallen Order". And I bet they're not the only ones to use that line, eh.

Elsewhere, COGConnected give the game 9/10 ("an immersive Star Wars experience"), The Sixth Axis award an 8/10 ("a super-satisfying mix of combat, story and exploration"), and PCGamesN's in-progress piece commends Fallen Order's "classic Metroidvania design". Which is to say: this is not your standard linear solo adventure.

At the time of writing, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has a Metascore of 90/100 for PC, 85/100 for Xbox One, and 84/100 for PlayStation 4. On OpenCritic, its rating stands at 86/100. All of which means I'm about to drop what I'm doing and play it myself.
