Ask people to list their top five favourite Star Wars games, and you'll likely get a massively varied set of answers. However, one game that's guaranteed to show up in almost every list is Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic. BioWare's 2003 RPG was a masterful piece of work. It was/is a critically acclaimed, staggeringly deep adventure that opened the door to an entirely new and fascinating chapter of Star Wars lore.
What a shame, then, that we got but one sequel, and that was 16 years ago. That was our lot. Rumours of a third game in the series have been floating around for over a decade and a half now, but nothing has ever come of it. Once EA picked up the license to develop and publish Star Wars games in 2013, there was hope that the EA-owned BioWare might finally make our dreams come true, but... nope.
All of this to say, I'd usually be very wary of reporting on any KoTOR-related rumours... but a newly-surfaced report seems to have come at a time when the KoTOR franchise is officially being acknowledged again in a pretty substantial way. First, there was the news that Disney was developing a new film (or possibly TV series) based on The Old Republic era of Star Wars. Last we heard, the script for that project was reportedly finished.
Not too long after that, Star Wars Episode VIII: The Rise Of Skywalker surprised us all by making a key character from KoTOR canon once again. You might remember that when Disney acquired Star Wars all those years ago, they wiped pretty much all of the spinoff media from official continuity in favour of a clean slate. This, of course, included the events, worlds, and characters from BioWare's RPG.
However, Darth Revan - the hero/villain of KoTOR - was made canon once again with the release of the latest Star Wars movie. According to the official Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Visual Dictionary, Emperor Palpatine's hefty fleet of Star Destroyers and Sith Troopers contains one 5,000-strong legion known as "The 3rd: Revan Legion".

It wasn't much, but it was enough of a nod to fans to convince them that Revan was once again part of the official Star Wars cinematic universe.
Now, movie site Cinelinx - which claims to have accurately predicted the Ewan McGregor Obi-Wan series - has heard from two separate sources that a KoTOR reboot/re-imagining is in development at an EA-owned studio. According to the site, this new game would still acknowledge the events of the first two games, while telling a new story set during the same era.
Apparently, the idea of a KoTOR reboot was first floated back in 2015, but was put on the back-burner in order to focus on the new sequel trilogy. Now, it seems, EA has to return to work on the title. I obviously can't speak for the credibility of Cinelinx's alleged sources, so take this rumour with a massive pinch of salt, but it does potentially line up with some of the other Star Wars rumours we've been hearing.
I'm referring, specifically, to Project Luminous. According to Making Star Wars, a blog with a solid record of accurately reporting Star Wars leaks, Disney is looking to focus its next chapter of Star Wars movies on an era set centuries before The Phantom Menace. More interestingly still, this new era is apparently going to be an ambitious multimedia project spanning TV, film, and games.
With an Old Republic movie/TV show in the works, it's clear that Star Wars will be looking backwards as it moves forward. We'll have to wait and see exactly what the future holds for the franchise, but it would seem to me that Knights Of The Old Republic III is looking more likely than it has done in quite some time.
