After a weekend of teasers, publisher Electronic Arts has now shared the first details of Star Wars: Squadrons alongside a stunning new trailer. As suspected, the game is a first-person space dogfighting experience that promises to "bring the starfighter pilot fantasy to life."

A press release also confirms that the multiplayer-focused game will feature 5v5 multiplayer dogfights and "monumental fleet battles". Take a look at the cinematic trailer below. A full gameplay reveal will be taking place during EA Play on June 18th, so keep an eye out for that, too.

Star Wars: Squadrons is being developed by Motive studios, and is expected to launch October 2nd for PS4, Xbox One, and PC via Origin, Steam, and the Epic store. The game features an original story set after the events Return Of The Jedi, as the New Republic battles to eradicate the Empire once and for all, and boasts a single-player campaign as well as multiplayer action.

The single-player story will apparently "show players what it means to be a pilot," as they switch between the alternate perspectives of two customisable pilots. One serves in the New Republic's Vanguard Squadron, while the other fights for the Galactic Empire's Titan Squadron. A press releases teases a "diverse cast of original characters, as well as some cameos from familiar faces in the Star Wars galaxy".

As great as that sounds, the real meat of the experience looks to be the strategic 5v5 multiplayer battles. "Plan skirmishes with your squadron in the briefing room before taking off for space battles across the galaxy," the press release explains.

"Players will engage in strategic 5v5 multiplayer space battles with the goal of demolishing the opposing flagship in Fleet Battles and will feel the rush of first-person multiplayer combat as they work with their squadron to defeat as many opponents as possible in Dogfights.

"Pilots will triumph as a team, adjusting the composition of their squadrons to suit their playstyles as they progress, crushing their opponents and completing objectives across known and never-before-seen locations, including the gas giant of Yavin Prime and the shattered moon of Galitan."

You'll also be glad to know that Squadrons offers a variety of cosmetic and gameplay options that can be unlocked entirely through gameplay. Ranking up earns new components such as weapons, hulls, engines and shields to customize the performance of their starfighters.

We'll also be able to earn cosmetic items to change up the look of the cockpit, ship exteriors, and appearance of their pilot. Oh, and players can play with anyone regardless of platform, thanks to cross-play support between PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

It certainly sounds like exactly the kind of game Star Wars fans like myself have been longing for since... well, probably since Rogue Squadron II launched way back in 2001. Get me into the cockpit, because I'm more than ready to wipe out some Imperial bad guys.

"We created this game for every Star Wars fan who has ever dreamed about soaring across the galaxy in their favorite starfighter," said Ian Frazier, creative director at Motive Studios.

"Through the collaboration of the teams at Motive and Lucasfilm, we've been able to create a high-fidelity starfighter experience with an authentic storyline that invites Star Wars fans to explore never-before-seen corners of the galaxy in their own ship. We're excited to show all this in action this week at EA Play Live."
