Lucasfilm is bringing the long-dormant Lucasfilm Games brand back for the dead as the new home for all its gaming properties - including all future Star Wars titles.
"Lucasfilm's legacy in gaming stretches back decades," the company wrote in its announcement post, "and with Lucasfilm and the galaxy far, far away entering a new and unprecedented phase of creativity, so will the world of Lucasfilm Games".
Lucasfilm Games was, of course, the original name of the prestigious company's gaming division established all the way back in 1982. This gaming arm of Lucasfilm would go on to create some of the best Star Wars games of all time, including Knights Of The Old Republic, Jedi Knight, and the original Battlefront titles.
Lucasfilm Games was ultimately rebranded as LucasArts in the 90s, though the company's entire gaming division was shuttered in 2012 when Lucasfilm acquired Disney. It's not clear how many Star Wars projects were on the go at LucasArts at that time, but all of them, including the promising-sounding Star Wars 1313, were scrapped. Maybe this new Lucasfilm Games can pick up where its predecessor left off.

The revived Lucasfilm Games will work "in collaboration with the finest studios across the industry," which suggests that EA will continue to publish its own Star Wars games - at least for now. The company's ten-year license to create and publish Star Wars video games expires in 2023, and the return of Lucasfilm Games strongly suggests Disney won't be looking to renew that particular partnership.
All games released under this new (old) Lucasfilm Games umbrella will be signified with a shiny new logo. Social media channels for the brand are also now live on Twitter and Facebook, and this is where we can probably expect to see the biggest reveals going forward.
Here's hoping this marks the start of a great new chapter for Star Wars video games... and if we're very lucky, the Knights Of The Old Republic 3 announcement that we've been waiting years for.
