If You Stare At Norman Reedus’ Crotch In ‘Death Stranding’, He’ll Punch You

Kojima's male characters don't like being stared at anywhere near as much as his female ones.

One of the stranger things to come out of the Tokyo Game Show is a feature in Death Stranding: if you stare at Norman Reedus' crotch, the actor will grab the in-game camera and punch it. And, considering this is a game where if you pee in the wild a mushroom will grow, which other players can then pee on, that's still a rather odd touch.

Last week, Kojima Productions' founder Hideo Kojima showed off a massive chunk of a massive chunk of Death Stranding gameplaygameplay, revealing the game was about you hiking between human settlements, delivering supplies and keeping out of people in hazmat suits and disturbing demonic creatures. You can't do much crotch staring in that portion of the game - that's when it's a much more traditional third-person open world game. It's in the down-time segments that you can attempt to stare at Reedus' junk.

Whenever you reach a human settlement, Reedus drops off the supplies you've carried and then goes for a well-earned relax. There the game switches to a self-care sim, with you having Reedus shower off the outer world stank, go to the loo, and get in some clean clothes. And, if you choose to, you can point the camera at the big man's crotch.

Kojima's games have a number of notable moments when you can perv on its characters. In Metal Gear Solid, you could sit in an air vent and watch one of the characters - Meryl Siverburgh - working out in her cell. If you left the vents and returned to her cell four times she would be working out in her underwear. Similarly, at a later point, if you chase her into the bathroom while she's disguised, she doesn't have enough time to change and is in her underwear for the next scene.

In Metal Gear Solid 5, if you fly back to base with Quiet, the game's barely dressed companion, and you've not cleaned up then it will cue a cinematic where she showers with you. Similarly, if you return to base with her and it's raining, then it will cue a scene where she dances seductively in the storm.

Kojima's characters also often recognise when you stare at them. In Metal Gear Solid, for instance, if you stared at Meryl in the first-person view for a long time she would begin to blush and comment on you watching her. In The Phantom Pain, if you stare at Quiet in the helicopter on the way to a mission, she will lean in towards you, giving the player a closer look at her chest - it even increases the player's bond with the character.

Clearly there is quite a difference between the way Kojima's male characters respond to being stared at compared to his female characters.
