Every now and again a game comes along that takes everyone by surprise and redefines an entire genre. Dark Souls. Fortnite. Hades. It's an elite club, and one that Tencent hopes to join with its latest effort, an open-world zombie survival game called Undawn.
This seems... ambitious. for one thing, the terms "open-world", "zombie", and "survival" have been thrown around in video games for so long in various forms that it's hard to be too excited about a studio coming at a game that combines all three from any kind of new angle. But hey, who knows what could happen? It looks pretty promising, to be fair! You can check out a trailer below.

Undawn certainly sounds promising enough. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, players have to explore and work together to scavenge, craft, build bases and fight off zombie hordes. Fellow humans can also present a threat and will need to be dealt with too. It's currently planned to release on mobile devices and PC later this year.
"With Undawn, we wanted to create a new type of action game that combines open-world freedom with RPG elements that would completely redefine the genre, regardless of platform," explained Rick Li, executive producer at developer Lightspeed & Quantum Studios. "The fact that we created such an amazing experience for mobile and PC platforms means that even more players around the globe will be able to survive the apocalypse together, creating the potential for a huge new type of open world experience."
Hello? Is anyone out there? Are there any survivors...can you hear me? If anyone is out there...this is the Raven's Shelter Rescue Signal. Please answer if you receive this message... pic.twitter.com/vpfdAhhsxj

The huge success of Genshin Impact has proved beyond all reasonable doubt that open-world RPGs can thrive on mobile in ways we'd never have thought possible a few years ago. There's every chance that a more realistic open-world zombie adventure that you can pick up and play with friends wherever you are could emerge as one of gaming's next big hits. Watch this space.
