For those who might not remember, The Expendables and its two sequels follow the adventures of a group of elite mercenaries. It's essentially just an excuse to get the likes of action movie icons like Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford, Jet Li, Terry Crews, and Arnold Schwarzenegger together on the big screen, but there's denying it works! The critical response might never have been glowing, but all three films have made around $804,103,926 at the box office worldwide.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, and Randy Couture have so far all agreed to return for one more outing. They'll be joined by newcomers to the franchise Megan Fox, Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson, and Tony Jaa.
Directorial duties on The Expendables 4 will be handled by Need For Speed's Scott Waugh. Spenser Cohen, Max Adams, and John Joseph Connolly are working on the script ahead of production kicking off properly in October.
There's no word on the plot just yet, but THR hints that the thrust of the move will be about the film's younger stars taking the lead from many of its older action veterans. Stallone's Barney Ross has long since been the fulcrum of the entire franchise, but it's claimed Statham's brilliantly named Lee Christmas will have more of the focus this time around. Meanwhile, Fox will be playing the film's female lead.
