Report: The ‘Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic’ Movie’s Script Is Nearly Finished

Not only is the 'Knights of the Old Republic' being turned into a movie, but the script is reportedly almost complete.

The script for the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic film is reportedly nearly finished. This comes after last month's news confirming that a project based on the games was being developed.

Last month LucasFilm president Kathleen Jones confirmed the studio was looking at Knights of the Old Republic to develop it into something for the screen, though we didn't know if that would be television or film. However, according to Buzzfeed's sources, the project will be a film and it's being written by Laeta Kalogridis, who also wrote the script for Alita: Battle Angel.

Buzzfeed claims that not only is the film script being written but that Kalogridis has almost finished the screenplay. Whether that means it is the first draft, or the next step will be pre-production is unclear.

Set nearly 4,000 years before the current Star Wars films, the Knights of the Old Republic games show a time when the Jedi were numerous and a strong power in the galaxy. You would lead a mixed party of Jedi, non-force adepts, and droids across the galaxy trying to put down Sith uprisings. The series only had two games, one made by Bioware, the other by Obsidian, but they remains two of the best-loved RPGs, let alone the best-loved Star Wars games.

We shouldn't necessarily get our hopes up that we will be seeing ancient Jedi do battle with ancient Sith any time soon, though. Disney announced earlier this month that following The Rise of Skywalker in December this year, the final film of the new trilogy, the next Star Wars film won't be coming until December 2022. And that film will be a new trilogy created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the showrunners of Game of Thrones. Now, those three films will be released over the course of six years - with a new film coming every two years - so there are gaps for other films in that time, but there's no news whether the Knights film would be fitted into those off years.

While there's a chance Benioff and Weiss are making Knights of the Old Republic films, Buzzfeed claims that Kalogradis was hired in Spring last year to work on her script, whereas the deal with the Game of Thrones showrunners was only made recently.

It will be interesting to know what threads of the two Knights games Kalogradis will be drawing from. It makes sense that she would start with the story of Revan and Darth Malak from the first game, but we recently learned what the story of Knights of the Old Republic 3 would have been. Perhaps that's something that would make for an interesting film - who wouldn't want to watch a film about Jedi hunting Sith lords?
