'The Last Jedi' Director Is Still Developing His Star Wars Trilogy

Though it's been three years since the original announcement, Rian Johnson is still on board to write and direct a new trilogy of Star Wars movies.

Johnson got the gig before Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released in theatres, so it seemed that the Disney bigwigs liked what they saw in the script and wanted more of this fresh spin on the established series. However, if we remember one thing about The Last Jedi, it's the incredible scene where Kylo and Rey fight Snoke's Praetorian Guard in his blood-red throne room. That, and the divisive reception from fans. Some preferred the emotional maturity of the storyline, how the characters have changed through the events that they were subjected to in the original trilogy, and the irreverence with which it dealt with the galaxy far, far away. Others didn't like that core characters weren't allowed to shine into the spotlight as much as others were, that Rey's arc didn't tally with their own theories, and that the humour was misplaced.

Right now, I'm wearing a black sweatshirt which says "Directed by Rian Johnson" in blue text with white stars surrounding the letters, so you can surmise what I thought of The Last Jedi. After considerable controversy and a final film that retconned a lot of his writing, the director's future collaborations with Disney looked like they were cast into doubt. Combine this with the fact that we haven't heard anything else about Johnson's new trilogy since 2017, all the while Star Wars spinoffs are arriving from all directions, and new Star Wars games are on the way too. The omission burns brighter than a Resistance ship slicing through the First Order fleet at light speed, don't you think?

Well, no news is good news, as it turns out. Author Sariah Wilson recently got the chance to chat to Johnson and naturally, Star Wars was a pretty prevalent part of their conversation. He affirmed that Rey and Kylo's arcs were written as a star-crossed romance, though their journeys wouldn't be realised until The Last Skywalker. He also added that he is working on his trilogy with Disney, but no timelines have been officially pencilled in because both parties have other projects to attend to. Honestly, that makes a lot of sense. In addition, spreading out the trilogies will only do them good as they'll be able to connect to the previous stories but simultaneously carve their own space out in the wider canon. Those are my two cents, anyway.
