A PlayStation 5 remaster for The Last Of Us Part 2 might be on its way, according to a listing for the game on Best Buy.

The Last Of Us Part 2 is a pretty polarising game, with plenty of critics praising its narrative, its art direction, character development, and haunting soundtrack. However, before it launched, Naughty Dog were subjected to a hack which released the entire story of the game online. Players who had been waiting for six years had extremely important plot points spoiled, and some of them didn't like that this survival-horror game explored themes of religion, sexuality, and gender. These people then barraged the game with review bombs, bringing its user score on Metacritic to a measly 3.4 out of 10.

Their shrewd strategy evidently worked flawlessly, as the game surpassed the launch sales statistics of the original The Last Of Us, and has sold more than four million copies around the world. Good job, everyone. "The reviews were awesome, and it's great to hear people love the game and how much it resonates with them, but nothing comes close to hearing ... any member of the team ... say this is the best game I've ever worked on. F*ck the haters. Nothing makes me prouder that I've worked on in my life than this game," said creative director Neil Druckmann.

Owing to the fact that it launched nearing the advent of the PlayStation 5, The Last Of Us Part 2 has been seen as a swansong for the PlayStation 4, from one of Sony's most capable and artistic studios. Whatever Naughty Dog's next project is, it will likely be built from the ground up for the PlayStation 5's spiffy specs. That's why it's very interesting that The Last Of Us Part 2 is allegedly receiving refurbishment for the next-gen gizmo.

Costing $29.99, which is an amazing price for a game that's been nominated in nine categories at The Game Awards 2020, the description for the product used to claim that it would come with a "next-gen upgrade." Note the past tense here. This text has been scrubbed from the listing now, which suggests two possibilities. Firstly, that this was an error and Best Buy realised what had transpired, and deleted the reference to a "next-gen upgrade" because it doesn't exist.

Or, secondly, that there is a "next-gen upgrade" and Best Buy let the cat out of the bag, quickly eradicating the evidence. It's not out of the question. GamesRadar report that The Last Of Us Part 2 is compatible with the DualSense's haptic feedback systems. This lets the game replicate the tension of pulling the bowstring backwards on Ellie's bow inside the controller, which is something that simply isn't possible on the DualShock 4. In addition, it causes vibrations in the controller for every shot that the player takes, ensuring that a bolt-action rifle actually feels different to a pistol.

These could be tidy little extras for players on PS5, or they could be the remnants of a testing period on an enhanced version of the game for the PS5. Naughty Dog hasn't confirmed nor denied anything at the moment, so we'll keep you in the loop when we know more.
