The Last Of Us Part II was one of 2020's most divisive games when it launched back in June. It's fair to say that Naughty Dog's long-awaited sequel wasn't quite the release that many of us were expecting, for a number of reasons... but that hasn't stopped it from cleaning up a massive amount of GOTY awards - the most of any 2020 release by some distance, in fact.
according to gameawards.net, a handy little site that trawls the internet and collates how many awards each game has won, The Last Of Us Part II raked in at least 207 various gongs. At December's Game Awards (arguably the biggest show of the year) Naughty Dog's title took home an impressive seven prizes, including Best Action/Adventure award, and the coveted Game Of The Year. It also took home Best Narrative, Best Game Direction, Best Audio Design, Innovation in Accessibility, and Best Performance for Laura Bailey as Abby.
Further breaking it down, The Last Of Us Part II earned 143 awards that were decided on by media outlets, and 64 that were reader's choice. Proof, I think, that all of the noise and controversy that was whipped up around the launch of the game was made by a vocal minority who never had any intention of playing the game. That's not to say there aren't people who played it and have their own, valid reasons for disliking it. But it's great to see that people did see the adventure through to the end, and that they loved what they played.
The Last Of Us Part II was also 2020's most-awarded game by an incredible amount. Supergiant's excellent dungeon crawler Hades, which was actually GAMINGbible's favourite game of 2020, had the second most awards of the year with 47. Impressive, but not a patch on Naughty Dog's 207. Hades is still fantastic though, and you should totally check it out when you get a chance.
I imagine you won't be surprised to learn that Sony's other big PS4 exclusive of the year, Ghost Of Tsushima, came in third, just a little behind Hades. Sucker Punch's open-world samurai adventure earned 28 awards from media outlets, and 8 reader's choice awards. Not too shabby at all.
This is also means that PlayStation 4 exclusives were, collectively, the most-awarded games of 2020 by far... although The Last Of Us Part II did most of the heavy lifting there. I love it when a boycott works, don't you?
