'The Mandalorian' Could Feature Key 'Star Wars Battlefront II' Character In Season Two

The Mandalorian's first season came to a close recently, ending a terrific run of episodes on a real high. Now, fans of the Disney Plus (or Disney+, if you prefer) Star Wars series are looking ahead and wondering just what we can expect from the continuing adventures of Baby Yoda and his sidekick, Mando.

Details are unfortunately a little thin on the ground right now. Beyond confirmation that the show will return this autumn, we don't really know what surprises are in store for the unlikely duo. However, a recent (alleged) casting leak suggests that at least one familiar face from Star Wars lore will be appearing in The Mandalorian's second season.

Before we go any further here, story spoilers for 2017's Star Wars Battlefront II follow. So, if you've not played it yet, but want to, and want to go into its campaign blind, click away now.

Okay... According to a rumour currently doing the rounds, it looks like The Mandalorian is headed for a crossover with EA's Battlefront II, of all things. You'd be forgiven for forgetting that the DICE-developed online shooter had a campaign mode, but it did. What's more, it featured a number of original characters in the mix. And it's one of these original characters we might just be seeing again in the Disney+ show.

Iden Versio (remember her?) was the lead character of Battlefront II's campaign. Brilliantly played by Janina Gavankar, Versio was a devoted servant of the Empire who, over the course of the game, defects to join the Rebel Alliance and helps to fight the good fight. There she is, just below. Refresh your memory.

Gavankar was recently contacted by a fan on Twitter, who presented her with the leaked casting news to ask if she could confirm the rumour. Her response, as you can see below, gives nothing away. She simply asks interested fans to get in touch with Dave Feloni, the showrunner on The Mandalorian.

Not a confirmation, then... but not a denial either. Make of it what you will, but I don't think the idea of Gavankar reprising her role as Versio is the most outlandish thing I've ever heard.

For a start, Versio's place in the Star Wars timeline lines up neatly with The Mandalorian. The last time we see the character in Battlefront II is after the Battle of Jakku, where she's just helped the Rebels to take down the Empire once and for all. The Disney Plus show, as you might be aware, is set five years after the Battle of Jakku. We could easily pick up with Versio to see where she's at, then.

I don't even think viewers need to have played Battlefront II to understand exactly who Versio is. Simply explaining that she used to serve the Empire before defecting would surely tell us everything we need to know about the character for an appearance in The Mandalorian, while also providing a neat Easter egg for the hardcore fans.

We'll have to wait for official word from Disney, but if characters can make the jump from movies to games... well, I don't see why it couldn't work both ways. Hell, The Rise of Skywalker made Darth Revan canon again, so anything is possible.
