Last week it was confirmed that Disney and LucasFilm had severed ties with actor Gina Carano, who played Rebel sharpshooter Cara Dune in The Mandalorian. Carano was dropped from the Star Wars universe following a social media post in which she drew parallels to being Republican in 2021 and being Jewish during the Holocaust.
"Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future," a Lucasfilm spokesperson said in a statement. "Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.
Carano's split from Disney has sparked intense debate over the last few days. One of the key things fans of The Mandalorian find themselves wondering is whether Cara Dune will be recast. Fans have already thrown their weight behind Lucy Lawless and Don Cheadle to replace Carano in the Disney+ show. One of those suggestions is more serious than the other, but I'd be happy with either.
A new piece published by The Hollywood Reporter appears to have confirmed that Dune will not be recast - at least not in the near future. While insiders had previously claimed that a new actor will step into the role for "story and merchandising reasons", a source at LucasFilm refutes this. They say that recasting is "not expected". Then again, I'd imagine firing Carano wasn't expected either. Sometimes you gotta roll with the punches
If Cara Dune isn't recast, that leaves Disney with two realistic options: they can either write her out of the show without showing her, or simply pretend she never existed in the first place. I'd put my money on Dune dying on the way back to her home planet in the first episode of The Mandalorian's next season.
