I already own The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Now it's time to add the outstanding open-world RPG to a fifth console, as CD Projekt RED has just confirmed that it'll be making its way to next-gen consoles.

The Witcher 3 next-gen upgrade will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC as a standalone purchase if you've never played it before. It'll also come packaged with the excellent expansions Hearts Of Stone and Blood And Wine, which almost double the game's entire runtime between them.

Of course the really exciting news is that those of us who already own it on PS4/Xbox One will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version for free. I thought I was done with my playthroughs of the game, but I guess I need to saddle up for a fifth time. Ah well.

"Developed to take advantage of powerful video-game hardware, the next generation edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for PC, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5 will feature a range of visual and technical improvements," CDPR wrote in a press release. "Including ray tracing and faster loading times -across the base game, both expansions, and all extra content."

It's not entirely clear when this next-gen version of The Witcher 3 will be available, but I'm hoping/assuming that it'll be ready on or around the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X in November. No doubt CDPR will share more about how to claim the upgrade closer to the time.

The Witcher 3 is already one of the most impressive-looking open-world video games available on current-gen consoles, so I'm seriously intrigued to see how substantial this next-gen upgrade is. A recent graphical overhaul mod completely retooled all of the game's textures and objects in stunning 4K, and that was genuinely impressive. If the official upgrade comes close to that mod (which you can check out here) then we're in for a serious treat.
