Netflix's long-awaited live-action adaptation of The Witcher finally arrives this Friday, December 20th. The eight-episode first series will (hopefully) introduce an entirely new audience to Geralt, Yennefer, and the rich fantasy world originally created by author Andrzej Sapkowski.

The assumption is that Netflix fully intends The Witcher to fill the Game Of Thrones-shaped hole in the life of fantasy fans everywhere, but can it live up to the hype? A number of fans were recently lucky enough to catch an early screening of the first episode in Hollywood, and the overwhelmingly positive reactions to the premiere seem to suggest that it can.

It's worth noting that a lot of those in attendance were already fans of The Witcher franchise, so their opinion is likely to be a little more positive by default. With that said, it's interesting to get their initial reactions on the show. Henry Cavill, in particular, received a ton of praise for his portrayal of Geralt. Not that I was ever in any doubt that the former Man of Steel would smash it, of course.

Read on for some more initial reactions below. Just note that full reviews and impressions are still under embargo, so attendees couldn't go too deep on details.

TLDR then: The Witcher is shaping up to be the show we all wanted it to be. The fight scenes are apparently great, the cast is solid - particularly Cavill - and there's plenty to love. I'll have to wait until Friday to form my own opinion, but this has left me massively optimistic.
