The law of surprise.

Right now, The Witcher is free to download for PC through GOG.com, CD Projekt Red's own digital distribution platform for video games and movies.

We've waxed lyrical over The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt over the years, and actually, it snagged the silver medal in our ginormous list of the greatest games ever made. "A rich, believable world; a hero with flaws aplenty and companions who love and hate him; and quests to make you laugh and cry: TW3 has it all. Plus, janky horses," said Mike. He's correct, of course, and those janky horses are oh-so-important for the cool cats who speed-run this 100 hour RPG and lived to tell the tale.

However, there wouldn't be a The Witcher 3 if there wasn't a The Witcher 2, and that's only conditional on the existence of a The Witcher. It's not like Star Wars where it starts halfway through the story, or like Kingdom Hearts where- no, I don't think I'll do that to our brains this early on a Monday. Moving on, the very first The Witcher game is being given away on GOG.com, in all of its crispy and crunchy goodness from the early 2000s.

Also, it's the Enhanced Edition that's on offer, which added more than 200 new animations and new NPC models to the original version, as well as a lick of paint and slashed loading times by approximately 80%. It might be less impressive now, in 2020, with our souped up laptops and desktops, but it's about the experience. In order to nab it, you'll need a GOG Galaxy account, and after installing the launcher and logging in, there will be an advert in the "Recent" section. Then, sign up for email updates from GOG.com, and then the game will be waiting there in your library. Result.

The GOG.com launcher isn't just a The Witcher machine, and features frequent sales for lots of other games from other studios. It's quite the golden goose for CD Projekt Red, too, contributing $12.2 million in sales revenue in the first quarter of this year. Last but not least, if you pre-order Cyberpunk 2077 on GOG.com before December 10th, you'll get a 30% discount on official merchandise.
