The anticipated prequel show for The Witcher is chugging along in pre-production, and it's recently announced that a Game of Thrones actor has bagged a role as a central character.

Produced by Netflix, The Witcher: Blood Origin is set more than a thousand years before the events of the series of books, and its premise is extremely intriguing to those who are fascinated with the world that author Andrzej Sapkowski built. In this elven world, ahead of the people's departure for the Continent on ships through a portal, Blood Origin will tell the story of the very first Witcher and how the conjunction of the spheres came to pass, mixing the worlds of monsters, men and elves into one. So, fan favourites like Geralt, Yennefer, Ciri, and Vesemir won't appear, but the possibilities are endless, and if you count yourself as a fan of the series, then this should definitely be on your radar.

Laurence O'Fuarain has joined the cast, and he's known for his roles as Simpson in Game of Thrones and Hakon in Vikings. He will play Fjall who is understood to be a core character in the events that unfurl. "Born into a clan of warriors sworn to protect a King, Fjall carries a deep scar within, the death of a loved one who fell in battle trying to save him," read the description provided by the show's official Twitter account. "A scar that won't let him settle, or make peace with himself or the world around him. In his quest for redemption, Fjall will find himself fighting beside the most unlikely of allies as he carves a path of vengeance across a continent in turmoil."

It's a huge get for Blood Origin and O'Fuarain, so hats off to the team. The only other confirmed casting is that of the nomadic songstress Éile, who will be played by Jodie Turner-Smith. She's been in the movie Queen & Slim as the titular female protagonist, as well as Nightflyers and True Blood. Éile is a former formidable warrior who has forsaken her duties in the Queen's guard to become a musician. "A grand reckoning on the Continent forces her to return to the way of the blade in her quest for vengeance and redemption," stated the release reported by Deadline.

The Witcher has also seen a tonne of upcoming characters cast in the second season of the show, including Philippa Eilhart, Dijkstra, Codringher, Fenn, and Rience. Get the lowdown here.
