Netflix's incoming second season of The Witcher has just cast a major player in Geralt's world. According to a new report, the immensely talented Cassie Clare (Beauty And The Beast, Mamma Mia!) has just signed on to play Philippa Eilhart.

For those that might be too well-versed in the wonderful world of The Witcher, Philippa Eilhart is a powerful sorceress and royal advisor. She's crossed paths with Geralt in a big way in both the video games and books, so expect her presence to be a major one in the upcoming season.

Philippa appears in The Witcher 2: Assassin's Of Kings and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as a friend or foe, depending on your choices. Canonically speaking, she's a major antagonist in the second Witcher game before becoming something of an ally in The Witcher 3. Things don't end well for her in either game though.

She plays a much larger role in the original Andrzej Sapkowski Witcher novels, however. Here, Phillipa is an important political figure and advisor to King Vizimir of Redania. Her ambitions are a little grander than remaining a member of the king's court, though, and it's not long before she attempts a coup to take her place at the top. She also has an interesting relationship with Yennefer... in that Yennefer thinks she's pretty much the worst.

Season two of The Witcher has been in and out of filming over the last few months due to the pandemic, so we really have no idea when to expect the next run of episodes to land on Netflix. Last we heard, filming was going strong again after Henry Cavill recovered from a leg injury. Let's hope there are no more interruptions and that everybody stays safe while work wraps up once and for all.
