These Official Pokémon Skateboards Are A Thing Of Beauty

Gotta catch that air.

Did you know that Pokémon Gold/Silver (still the best games in the series) were originally supposed to feature skateboards as a means of transport? Way back in 1997, when Nintendo shared some of the first details regarding the original Pokémon sequels, it was revealed that the new games would offer a skateboard in addition the bicycle.

The skateboard, it seems, was intended to allow the player to travel to "unusual places". Unfortunately, we never learned exactly what Nintendo meant by that, as the skateboard feature was ultimately cut from Gold/Silver. It has, unbelievably, been over two decades since those games, and we haven't seen skateboards make their way into any subsequent core Pokémon titles.

But I bring good news for those of you who have so long been denied the Pokémon/skateboarding crossover you so desperately yearn for. The Pokémon Company has announced a new (real-life) partnership with skateboard designer Bear Walker to create an incredibly slick-looking line of limited-edition skateboards, starring five of the best first-generation Pokémon.

Take a look below at the five boards, featuring Mewtwo, Gengar, Pikachu, Gyarados, and Charizard. I would do unspeakable things for that Gengar board. Unspeakable, I tell you.

Bear Walker

"Bear Walker is a master craftsman of carved wood skateboards," reads a post on the Pokémon Center website. "He's partnering with Pokémon Center to create our first series of five limited-edition 29-inch skateboards. Each skateboard design features one of the world's most-popular Pokémon!

"Pokemon is highly recognisable with a massive fanbase in the skateboard community, including myself, so for this collection I wanted to make more than a traditional branded deck," Walker said in the press release. "I'm setting out to make functional works of art featuring Pokemon and iconography that fans love in the custom style my decks are known for."

The five boards combine to form Series 1 of the Pokémon Center X Bear Walker collection. All five will be on sale at the Pokémon Center starting February 11th. As far as I can see, there are no details on just how much these boards will cost yet, but I suspect they won't come cheap. Like I said, unspeakable things will be done in exchange for a Gengar deck. Is anyone taking me seriously? I'm not kidding.

I'd expect these limited edition boards to be snapped up fairly quickly, so I'd advise keeping your finger on the pulse come February 11th if you want to claim one for yourself. The (potentially) good news is that the way The Pokémon Company refers to these boards as Series 1 suggests there are more to come, but we'll have to wait and see.
