There was a time once when I looked upon the majesty that the PlayStation 2 had to offer with wide-eyed bewilderment. I gazed in awe at Ico and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and thought, yes, this is as realistic as computer generated graphics could ever possibly be.
I was, to put it mildly, wrong about that. Gaming and graphical fidelity is increasing at an alarming rate. The whole industry is improving so fast, that it seems studios can comfortably release new-gen remasters just years after the original and they still look like they've improved drastically. Yet when most people talk about the best in graphics, they often look to the gaming engine Unreal Engine 5.

Usually when you see modders and developers re-imagining old games for the latest technology, it's the Unreal Engine 5 that they choose to work in. Whether that's Resident Evil 4 or Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, it almost feels that everyone is working in Unreal over its competitors.
Now, Unity has stepped up and shown us its money maker. The engine is known for gorgeous 2D titles such as Cuphead, Hollow Knight, and Ori And The Blind Forest, which, while beautiful in how they look, are not particularly graphically demanding.
The company which designed the engine have released a new cinematic trailer titled 'Enemies' which showcases a photo-realistic model of a woman, contrasted against a Doctor Strange style mechanical moving background. Two minutes long, there isn't a whole number of environments to gawp at, but what we can see is impressively realistic.
It seems that Unity has set the bar pretty high with its video, but if you don't believe me you can compare it with the Unreal Engine 5 showcase, and see who you think is winning the game engine wars.
