Of all the viral internet sensations to have existed, I think TikTok's ongoing sea shanties might just be the best. If you've been keeping your head down and avoiding the internet for the last few weeks (an understandable reaction to global affairs) then you will have missed the wholesome nautical trend that kicked off late last year.

Dubbed #ShantyTok by the people of the internet, we've seen an explosion in videos of people singing along to centuries-old sea shanties, and really enjoying it. A quick scroll through TikTok shows hundreds of videos of friends and family singing along together as if they were a crew stuck on a whaling ship with an ever-dwindling supply of rum. If ever a mood reflected the last 12 months... to be fair, that's something many have been quick to point out when asked why sea shanties have made such an unexpected return.

While the resurgence of sea shanties may have come as a surprise to many, this is something I think gamers everywhere have been prepared for since 2013. I'm referring, of course, to Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag. Ubisoft's epic open-world pirate game was a brilliant entry in the long-running franchise for many, many reasons, but its excellent soundtrack is something that has remained especially popular among fans.

While sailing the high seas, Edward Kenway's crew can sing a selection of no less than 35 sea shanties - all real songs that travelers would sing back in the 18th century, and all absolute bangers. Fans of the game often describe Black Flag as having one of the best soundtracks in gaming, and while those that have never actually played might assume that's a joke, there's something truly magnificent about the communal spirit of a sea shanty... something more and more people are starting to realise now it's become a viral trend.

Even God Of War director Cory Barlog took to Twitter recently to say that the #ShantyTok trend has inspired him to go back to Black Flag, purely so he can sail around and listen to those classic songs again. If you've never played Black Flag before, now is the perfect time to go back and see why so many of us were obsessed with sea shanties nearly a decade before they were an internet craze. If you have played Black Flag before? You know what to do: boot it up again and start singing Randy Dandy-Oh at the top of your lungs.
