'Titanfall 3' Looking Much More Likely, EA Says It's Now Up To Respawn

Remember The Titanfall

In what can only be described as the video game industry equivalent of "go ask your mother", Electronic Arts has effectively confirmed that the future of the Titanfall franchise lies in the hands of developer Respawn Entertainment.

It's been nearly five years since the release of the excellent and criminally underrated Titanfall 2, and fans have been desperate for a sequel ever since. Respawn, of course, has been incredibly busy working on the Titanfall-adjacent battle royale Apex Legends, as well as the excellent Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Between these massive projects, it doesn't seem like there's been much time for a Titanfall 3, even though EA and Respawn are very much aware of how badly the people covet such a game.

Still, there is hope on the horizon at last. In a recent interview with IGN, EA's chief studios officer Laura Miele admitted that, in the end, it's up to Respawn whether Titanfall 3 game happens or not. This could simply be Miele doing what she can to make she's never asked another damn question about Titanfall 3 again, but I'd rather see it as a window into an exciting future.

Miele explained that she doesn't think EA should instruct developers on what they should be making, and that it's better for teams to have the freedom to build what they want to build. Given the recent news that BioWare has been allowed to scrap the live service elements of the upcoming Dragon Age to focus on single-player, her words ring true.

"[Respawn] will determine what the future holds for Apex and Titanfall," she said. "I don't believe in directing or telling games teams what to create, it has to come from the player community, and the inspiration and motivation of developers."

Titanfall 3 rumours have circulated for a few years now, although nothing has ever come of it. Reports that the game was in active development emerged last year, but Respawn has denied these claims.

"There's nothing currently in development," Respawn's Vince Zampella said last year. "But it's always there. You see the little bits of stuff coming back [through the lore in Apex Legends]. At some point, I would personally like to see some kind of resurrection there. We'll see if I can make that happen."
