Titanfall Studio Shares Disappointing Update About Future Of The Franchise

You have to feel for the Titanfall franchise, don't you? Developer Respawn Entertainment released two of the most original, slick, and entertaining shooters - arguably of all time - and barely anybody played them. That's not to say Titanfall and Titanfall 2 don't have their fans, but they deserved so much more.

The good news is that world of Titanfall lives on as part of Respawn's hugely popular battle royale Apex Legends. Many of us were even hoping that the success of Apex Legends would lead to the Titanfall 3 we all crave, and at one point it looked as if that dream might actually come true.

Unfortunately, we now know not expect a new Titanfall game any time soon. Respawn co-founder Vince Zampella revealed in a recent interview with IGN that while Titanfall is always on the minds of those at the studio, "there's nothing currently in development". Obviously not the news fans were hoping to hear, but there's some light on the horizon.

"You see the little bits of stuff coming back [via Apex Legends]," Zampella added. "At some point, I would personally like to see some kind of resurrection there. We'll see if I can make that happen."

Respawn made it clear back when Apex Legends launched at the start of 2019 that Titanfall 3 wasn't in active development, but the fans never quite gave up hope. That hope was ignited once again last year when Zampella and EA boos Andrew Wilson said a "premium" game set in the Titanfall universe would be coming before the end of 2019.

But as I'm sure you've noticed, 2019 has come and gone, and this Titanfall game has not appeared. Given Zampella's latest comments, it sounds as if the project was cancelled or shelved indefinitely, rather than delayed. That's assuming Respawn were the studio working on it, of course.

If it had fallen to Respawn to work on this mystery Titanfall game, that might explain why we haven't - and will probably never - see it. After all, the studio is busy at work on the constantly evolving Apex Legends, and spent the last few years putting together Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

Given the success of that most recent Star Wars game, and the news that EA has plans for it to be the start of a franchise, we'll be lucky if Respawn ever finds time for Titanfall again. Still, let's keep the hope alive, eh?
