Toys 'R' Us Is Coming Back, Though Not For Everyone Just Yet

The nostalgia is real

Toys 'R' Us is on its way out of hibernation. Though the brand closed stores years ago, much to the sadness of many of us who loved strolling through the store as kids, surprisingly, physical stores are set to reopen - but only in limited areas.

Spotted IGN, the toy retail chain under the management of WHP Global, will be trying to reopen stores across North America. Although physical stores closed years ago as the company faces bankruptcy, there is hope that this reopening will breathe new life into the brand, and perhaps the nostalgia of the name will get people back into buying from the shop - as massive nerds, we'd definitely take a trip into the shop to purchase something like the LEGO x Super Mario collection even if we're not kids anymore.

However, it's not the first time a revival has been attempted for the brand. In 2019, two pop-up stores reopened in Texas and New Jersey USA for the holiday period when many families would be buying gifts for their kids. The way they attracted better crowds this time around was to make toys interactable, leaving room for testers and demonstrations. These two shops closed, however, when there weren't enough customers as the USA and world went into lockdown.

These experimental shops may have been enough for the brand to get back on its feet, however. Certainly, it gave the new owners, WHP Global, a better idea of what it's going to need to do to get people back in physical shops again. It will certainly be a challenge as the pandemic is still going on, and many have turned to online shopping to avoid the risk of contamination, but perhaps as things open back up, kids will want to see the toys they're putting on their Christmas lists this year.
