A Diablo Anime Series Is Heading To Netflix, Currently In Pre-Production

A while back, rumours surfaced that a Diablo series would be making its way to Netflix, based on the action RPG game series from Blizzard Entertainment. And now it seems that this has now been confirmed, judging by the Linkedin profile of Activision Blizzard Studio's president, Nick van Dyk, which says the anime series is currently in pre-production (thanks Gamespot).

The studio - not to be confused with Activision Blizzard Inc. - is the film and TV division, responsible for "adapting the company's intellectual property to film and TV".

The new information on the Diablo adaptation came to light from part of the job description on van Dyk's profile and reads: "Executive producer of Diablo, a TV adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment's IP, rendered in anime style. The show is currently in pre-production for distribution worldwide through Netflix."

According to the profile, it also seems an Overwatch animated series is also on the way, though the information on that isn't quite as clear, with the Linkedin profile only stating that he's "developed and sold" an animated series based on Overwatch. There's no indication of where or when this will appear, if ever.

The first rumours of a Diablo animated series started circulating a few years ago, right around the time that Blizzard confirmed that it was working on several Diablo-related projects. In fact, a tweet from Hellboy writer Andrew Cosby confirmed the series' existence, though the tweet was deleted pretty quickly afterwards and nothing was heard again.

The Diablo series as a whole hasn't received a ton of love recently. There was the hugely disappointing announcement of the mobile game, Diablo Immortal at BlizzCon 2018 and then when the Diablo 4 official reveal finally came in 2019, it all just seemed, well, a bit anticlimactic, especially after so many leaks beforehand. Hats off to Blizzard though, they do make some stunning cinematics - scroll back up (or click here) to check out the Diablo 4 announcement trailer, though you'll need a good 10 minutes to watch the whole thing.

The Diablo anime series hasn't been officially announced yet and even if it had, you're still going to have to wait quite a while as it's currently in pre-production. Perhaps they're planning on releasing it alongside - or just before - Diablo 4? I mean, if it's half as successful as The Witcher TV series, it's sure to drive up sales of the game.
