The Borderlands Movie Is Reportedly Being Directed By Eli Roth

The Borderlands movie - yes, it's apparently still in development - seems to have gained a new director. Eli Roth, whose credits include Cabin Fever, Hostel and The House with a Clock in its Walls, is signed up to helm the movie, according to Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford.

But not long after Pitchford made the announcement via Twitter (screenshot, below), his tweet was taken down. So we're unsure if the arrangement is still actually going ahead, or if he just made the reveal a little too early.

With so many game-to-movie adaptations in the works, it honestly seems pretty hard to get excited about another, especially when you have so little to go on. In fact, the last we heard about the Borderlands movie at all was that it would star an original female protagonist. Beyond that, who knows?

Still, you can see the original tweet for yourself above, which Kotaku managed to screenshot before it was taken down. According to the tweet, the movie is in development with Lionsgate - as we'd previously reported - as well as Arad Productions. We should get more details on the movie from PAX East at the end of the month.

If you're unfamiliar with him, Eli Roth's work on the likes of Grindhouse, Hostel and Cabin Fever may help you to gauge the tone of the upcoming Borderlands adaptation - an R rating certainly wouldn't be unexpected. That said, 2018's The House with a Clock in its Walls was not an adults-only affair and made a decent return at the box office. We also have no clue as to whether or not this will a live-action or animated movie - the involvement of Arad Productions (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Ghost in the Shell, several animated series) could point either way.

Borderlands 3 did extremely well when it was released in September, last year, and it quickly became the fastest-selling game in 2K's history. More than five million copies were sold in the first five days it was on sale. David Ismailer, president of 2K, had this to say: "Borderlands 3's incredibly successful launch is a result of the hard work and longstanding partnership between Gearbox Software and 2K. We are immensely grateful to everyone who played a role in making the Borderlands series the global, pop culture phenomenon that it is today."

And in related news, the Tomb Raider movie sequel will focus its story on the last two games in the rebooted trilogy and should begin filming this spring. The Witcher Netflix series has done so well that a tie-in movie called Nightmare of the Wolf is on the way in 2020. And lastly, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie has scored great reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, despite a slow start when it opened last week.
