Twitch's Biggest Streamer Banned For Cheating In Online Tournament

Félix Lengyel, better known as xQc on Twitch, has gotten himself temporarily banned from both Twitch and Twitch Rivals for violating the platform's Code of Conduct. The ex-Overwatch professional player 'stream sniped' contestants live on air which made Twitch act to discourage that sort of behaviour.

Stream sniping is the term for when people deliberately queue up in games or coincidentally find themselves in games with streamers. Then using the knowledge of what character the streamer is, the stream sniper will troll that player - focusing on them in games, or deliberately sabotaging gameplay to prevent the streamer winning. It's a massive problem in games like Valorant, Hearthstone, and Call of Duty: Warzone which makes it all the more surprising that xQc took part in the practice on his own stream. It's against the terms of service of Twitch even if you think it's just a joke.

It happened during GlitchCon - Twitch's online replacement for TwitchCon this year where a Twitch Rivals game was taking place. Twitch Rivals is the name for pretty much any tournaments held by Twitch, and this time based around Fall Guys. xQc and his team deliberately sabotaged the beans played by Dr Lupo, Tyler1, and Shroud. In doing so he participated in stream sniping and Twitch took action by banning him.

Twitch made the announcement on Twitter and the tweet reads, "At GlitchCon our player conduct rules were violated. We require all participants to abide by the same rules in order to play in a tournament. As a result, xQc has been issued a temporary twitch account suspension, a temporary Twitch Rivals ban and forfeited associated prize money."

The image attached is a long explanation of the rules xQc broke and what that meant. The summary reads, "During a Twitch Rivals tournament at GlitchSon, /xQcOW violated our Official Tournament Code of Conduct and Game Play Rules. Competitive integrity is important to us, and we expect all players to exhibit good sportsmanship and maintain respect for one another. His actions will result in a temporary ban from Twitch Rivals tournaments and forfeiture of prizing from the event. Additionally, for violating Twitch policies he has been issued a temporary Twitch account suspension."

xQc has since apologised for his actions. "Stop defending my everywhere for no reason. We got into the final game with Dr Lupo and Shroud's team. We shouldn't of done it and it was wrong. I'm sorry for my actions. I thought it would be funny. It did not change the outcome but it was still malicious. Sorry." In a follow-up tweet, he also revealed the ban is for seven days and he has offered to equal the forfeited winnings if they are donated to charity.

Basically, don't stream snipe - it's not funny or clever and it can get banned from Twitc. Hopefully, xQc doesn't have to go through another ban like this to learn it's not the right thing to do.
