Those of you who grew up in the early 00s will remember an explosion of 3D video game mascots. Inspired by the late-90's successes of characters like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, the air was thick with cutesy animals who ran around colourful levels collecting items and bouncing on enemies. It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

While most of these platformers fell pretty far short of the quality we'd seen from games like Super Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot 2, it wasn't all bad. Ty The Tasmanian Tiger was a particular highpoint back in the day. Developer Krome Studios released the first game in the series back in 2002 for GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox.

While by no means a genre-defining epic, it garnered enough love from the fans to spawn a handful of sequels. Ty went quiet for a long old time after the PS2 era, but fans were delighted when the original game was remastered earlier this year for modern consoles. Now, it looks as if Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 2: Bush Rescue is getting the exact same treatment.

Krome Studios announced the news today in a message to its Kickstarter backers (via Game Rant). As the developer had suggested earlier this year, plans are now fully in place to revive the sequel, and the team has started to look into the coding work that would bring HD version of Ty 2 - often regarded as the best one in the franchise - to modern consoles.

As exciting as this initial news is, it sounds like we can't really expect to see anything substantial from the project until early in 2021. Krome also said that there are currently no plans to develop a brand-new entry, presumably because this would take a considerable amount of time and effort that the team might not have at their disposal right now.

At least for the moment we can be content with the news that more classic Ty action is coming our way. If you want to relive some vintage 3D platforming fun, the first game in the series is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam.
