Ubisoft's Star Wars RPG Will Be Gritty And Grounded, According To Job Listings

Last week Ubisoft announced that it was teaming up with the newly reformed Lucasfilm Games to develop something we've all been waiting a very long time for: an open-world Star Wars video game.

Now that EA has lost its exclusive license to the franchise, Lucasfilm Games will be partnering with developers and publishers from all corners to create games based on various Lucasfilm properties. This brand-new Star Wars game, which will be developed by The Division studio Ubisoft Massive, is just the tip of the iceberg.

It's very early days for this new project, of course. Beyond the fact that it's an open-world story-driven experience that probably won't release until 2023 at the earliest, there's not very much at all we know about it. Fortunately, a series of newly unveiled job listings shed a little more light on the upcoming adventure.

As spotted by The Digital Fix, Ubisoft Massive is now hiring for developers to come work on its Star Wars game in earnest. Job listings include positions for a cinematic narrative designer, a senior game designer, and a senior writer. While these listings don't give away much, they do at least hint that the game will be a fairly deep RPG - one that favours some of the more grounded elements of the franchise.

The senior writer position states that the successful candidate will need to write "compelling item and quest log descriptions that expand the lore" and should play a key role in "developing character arcs and story beats through dialogue and other narrative elements". Definitely sounds like a traditional open world RPG experience to me, so no complaints here.

The listing adds that the candidate will need to "develop narrative elements to anchor a reality-based narrative within an existing IP." It's not entirely clear what this means, but it certainly suggests that the game will offer a more grounded take on the Star Wars experience. Massive's previous games have been shooters, so it could well be that the game puts us in the boots of a character far below the level of powerful Jedi Knights... perhaps even a Bounty Hunter of some kind?

The senior game designer listing doesn't give away too much. It simply states that the candidate will be helping create enemies and non-hostile NPCs. Hardly a scoop that an open-world RPG features combat an NPCs, but there you go.

Finally, the cinematic narrative designer position confirms that the project will feature "innovative quests that flow with the overall game". Sounds like we'll be getting side quests to go along with our main adventure, eh? More standard RPG goodness, but I'll take it all. Now all that's left to do is wait for more official news on this open-world Star Wars game and try not to let the hype consume my entire being in the meantime. Wish me luck.
