As the COVID-19 pandemic ravaged institutions around the world, football fans in the UK were forced to deal with the beautiful game being put on hold. Perhaps it's no surprise then, that supporters flocked to FIFA 20 during lockdown to live out the games that they had been denied in real life.
According to new data compiled by the Entertainment Retailers Association (via Eurogamer), the EA-published football title was the best selling game in the UK throughout lockdown. Or at least between March 23rd and June 13th, which basically covers the vast majority of the nation-wide lockdown.
FIFA 20 managed to shift 506,572 copies on all platforms during this period. It was closely followed by Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare (the 2019 version) with 474,902.copies sold, and Grand Theft Auto V with 438,902 copies sold. Obviously. The Rockstar Games open-world crime sim refuses to die, even nearly a decade on from release. No wonder it's coming to PlayStation 5. It'll outlive us all.
As impressive as these numbers are, they didn't quite match up to the two top-selling entertainment products, which were movies. It was another great day for Disney, as Star Wars Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker came in at number one in the UK with 637,484 copies sold during lockdown. Frozen 2 wasn't far behind with 541,783 copies sold.

Of the entire top 40 most-consumed entertainment products during lockdown in the UK, an impressive 21 were video games. That's over half, which is an incredibly impressive innings for a hobby that still seems to get looked down on and sniffed at by some of the snootier culture vultures out there.
