Unreal Engine 4 has been the framework for many huge games in its time. Fortnite, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Gears 5, and Borderlands 3 all used Epic's game engine to create hugely successful, complex projects. So it's no wonder that developers and fans alike are excited about the early access release of Unreal Engine 5, which will help deliver even more gorgeous titles. And top of Unreal Engine 5's list of things it can achieve is... rendering 3 million crabs.

According to Nintendo Life, Unreal Engine 5 is so good that it can render 3 million crabs at once. As the engine is arriving in the hands of developers, Noisestrom decided to test out its capabilities with his game, Crab Champions. In a tweet, the creator revealed that using the new Unreal Engine, he manages to cover an entire deserted island in these little red fiends.

Here is the latest tech demo showing you the impressive visuals Unreal Engine 5 will be able to achieve...

The video attached to the tweet is ridiculous. I mean, when Noisestrom said 3 million crabs, he really meant 3 million crabs - and that's not even the hard limit. In a follow-up tweet, the developer says that he got "past 3 million and then gave up because the performance stayed the same. Incredible tech from Unreal Engine." Well, sounds like a great party to us.

Unreal Engine 5 is now in Early Access for developers to play with. The team says it's not "production-ready" but in its current form it gives everyone a chance to have a go with its technology. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said, at the time of the original demo, "film-quality source art comprising hundreds of millions or billions of polygons can be imported directly into Unreal Engine," which is what excited audiences. Unreal Engine makes it seem possible for games to step even closer to looking like movies.

I'm not sure Sweeney expected it to be used to make millions of crabs though, but I reckon he'd still be proud to see the performance of the engine impress developers.
