All good things must eventually come to an end. The voice of Sonic The Hedgehog for the past ten years has retired from the role, leaving room for Sonic to once again be reinvented. Roger Craig Smith is a hugely accomplished voice actor, appearing in all sorts of games and animated series and now it's time for him to move on from the lovable blue rodent to new projects.

Sonic is one of the most recognisable game characters ever - the shoes, the golden rings, his series sidekicks are all iconic. Although the quality of the Sonic games can be, um, questionable, the cheery voice and fun attitude of the Sonic universe has always had something particularly endearing about it. And embodying that spirit was Roger Craig Smith.

You might know Roger Craig Smith as Sonic, but he's also the voice of characters like Ezio Auditore from the Assassin's Creed series. His name appears on so many billings from Ben 10 to Final Fantasy VII Remake to American Dad and beyond. The list of voice acting roles he has on IMDB is astounding.

A tweet revealed that the actor was leaving the role with a simple and sweet message. "Welp, 10 years was an amazing run. Onward to new zones! Much love to the fans who've been so kind. It's been an honor." And although the post never mentions Sonic by name, with all the blue hearts and talk of zones, it's an obvious reference to Sega's main man.

Later on, the voice actor comes back to Twitter with a beautiful heartfelt message thanking all his fans for the support over the years and in the last 24 hrs as the announcement was made.

But don't worry, a new Sonic will be chosen in no time at all, we're sure. Also, it should be noted that Smith isn't quitting all voice acting, oh no no, he'll also be back in some other fantastic role soon.
