Looks Like 'Watch Dogs: Legion' Online Mode Has Been Delayed Indefinitely

Looks Like 'Watch Dogs: Legion' Online Mode Has Been Delayed Indefinitely

PC players won't immediately be joining forces in London

We liked Watch Dogs: Legion when it launched late last year. It's definitely not the worst entry in its series, given the first title takes that crown with irritating ease. It might even be the best, or at least tied with the sunshine-kissed and curiously compelling Watch Dogs 2, which matched a beautiful San Francisco setting with a cast of characters to actually care about. Yeah, Watch Dogs 2 was darn good. Might redownload that, soon.

Anyway, the London-set Watch Dogs: Legion was great for getting us back onto the streets of the nation's capital - something we couldn't do because of lockdowns - and its version of Britain's biggest city was really quite special. A character, all of its own - and home to a wealth of NPCs who could be taken control of by the player, for all kinds of hijinks. Check out our landmarks comparison video, below.

However, as good as Legion's been as a solo experience, something's missing. Online multiplayer didn't launch when the game did - but it was on the horizon, with a March 9th release date previously confirmed. Sadly, now developer/publisher Ubisoft has issued a statement that'll disappoint those awaiting said mode.

As Rock Paper Shotgun and other sites are reporting, Watch Dogs: Legion's multiplayer mode has been indefinitely delayed on PC. Consoles... Yeah, that seems to be delayed, too. The game's official twitter account posted the following message, regarding its multiplayer status.

"We've identified an issue in the PC version that can cause the game to crash for players with certain GPUs. The team is working on fixing the issue... [but] we've made the decision to wait to launch the PC version until this is fixed. We will communicate the new launch date as soon as possible."

The statement also addresses an issue affecting consoles, which can cause the game to "crash during the tactical OP". Players on Xbox, Stadia and PlayStation are told that multiplayer will be up and running on March 23rd.

It's a slightly confusing message, NGL. It sounds both like the console multiplayer modes are launching on March 9th - tomorrow, as I write this - and that they're delayed until March 23rd. Right? Because of what's said at the top of the statement - "we're excited to see [you] when we launch the online mode on March 9" - and then what follows, i.e. the issues. We've emailed Ubisoft for clarification there, and will update these words when we have a reply.

In related sneakin' and hackin' content, do check out our interview with Watch Dogs: Legion's creative director, Clint Hocking.

Update: we've heard back from Ubisoft and the multiplayer modes for consoles will launch on March 9th, with the exception of the tactical ops mode, which will follow on March 23rd.
