Watch This Player Beat ‘Minecraft’ Without Mining a Single Block

Here was me thinking that Minecraft was a game all about digging and building, but how unimaginative am I? A player going by spikeyhedgey on Reddit (via PC Gamer) has managed to complete the entire game without mining a single block. They've released a video showing off how they managed it and it involves a lot of scavenging, a lot of crafty bucket use, and a whole lot of patience.

Spikyhedgey starts off by raiding a load of locations that can spawn items - though there's certainly no guarantee of it. Starting with the villages, they find food like bread and apples, and a few pieces of armour. They then tactically use creepers, the monsters that explode when you're too close to them, to blast trees into chunks of wood. With the wood they can craft a bench and a boat that they can use to travel to the game's pyramids. In those grand structures they can find even better gear, though, it's a dangerous journey with even more deadly enemies to face off with.

Through these scavenging runs, spikyhedgey is able to get all the equipment and crafting materials they need to reach the Nether. There they kill some endermen, harvest their pearls to make the eyes of ender, and head through the portal to reach the Ender Dragon. Luckeily they find a route through the caves to reach the dragon, rather than needing to blast through the environment with TNT, in the blind hope of coming across the beast.

What's particularly inspiring is the way spikyhedgey gets around falling from large heights by using a bucket of water to create a soft landing. It's a canny way of exploring the environment without being able to simply dig a staircase into the earth.

You can watch a highlight reel of their adventure below (or here if you're reading this on mobile):

These sorts of runs are equal parts impressive to watch and make me feel inferior about my own Minecraft abilities. I still spend the first night in Minecraft digging a cave into a cliffside and walling myself up inside until morning. Sometimes, if I think ahead, I'll remember to make a window so I can actually tell when it's morning.
