'The Witcher' Star Henry Cavill Prefers Staying In Gaming To Going Out

'The Witcher' Star Henry Cavill Prefers Staying In Gaming To Going Out

Henry Cavill, star of Netflix's The Witcher (out today!) is my kind of people. Even before landing the role of Geralt of Rivia in the eight-episode fantasy series, Cavill was a huge fan of the original Andrzej Sapkowski novels and CD Projekt RED trilogy of games. Cavill has a fondness for the The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in particular - a game he's played all the way through multiple times.

Cavill has never been shy about expressing his love for The Witcher. While preparing for the role of Geralt he was said to have "lived and breathed" the games and novels, and even looked to actor Doug Cockle's beloved performance as the monster hunter in the video games for inspiration.

But the world of The Witcher is far from Cavill's first experience with gaming. He is in fact, a massive nerd just like the rest of us. I feel like he and I could be best friends... but I dread to think what being stood directly next to him would do for my self confidence and body image.

In a recent interview with GQ, Cavill revealed that he much prefers staying in to play video games rather than going out. To be fair, most of us choose to stay in and game because it's preferable to being dragged to a bar or club we can't be arsed going to. In the case of Cavill, gaming at home is a literal escape from leaving the house and being bombarded with attention. Definitely can't relate to that.

"At home, I get to sit playing games for ridiculous amounts of hours and escape there," he explained "because going outside has the opposite effect."

Elsewhere in the interview, Cavill revealed just how deep his love for gaming runs. The actor grew up playing games like Half-Life,Delta Force, and Total War: Warhammer 2 (six times with six different races, in fact). He also revealed that he used to host LAN parties as a kid, which I can scarcely comprehend. Imagine being able to say you once went to Superman's house for a LAN party? I can't even.

On one of this many playthroughs of The Witcher 3, he even gamely had a crack at the hardest difficulty - something I've never been able to manage. Unfortunately it didn't go very well for Cavill, as he admits to GQ that he "kept dying" and probably "shouldn't have left the roads". Sage advice from The Witcher himself.

Even if Henry Cavill isn't the most accomplished virtual Geralt out there, you can watch him prove himself as the real deal in Netflix's The Witcher now. The show has been getting some pretty strong reviews. Our very own Witcher expert Mike Diver recently shared his thoughts on the first five episodes, and hailed it as a "worthy rival" to Game of Thrones.
