A recent report claims that the X-Men might be returning to the silver screen in the shape of a shiny new reboot under the supervision of Disney's Marvel Studios.
This tidbit comes from The Illuminerdi, which is the same source that asserts Jason Momoa will play Knuckles in the next Sonic The Hedgehog movie, Keanu Reeves is interested in the role of Kraven the Hunter, and Will Arnett will don the mask of Sweet Tooth in the Twisted Metal TV show. Either they've got their mitts on those banned blue Smartie E numbers, or they've got a guy on the inside. It's tough to tell these days, after enduring the calamity of 2020 and the present predicaments of 2021. In short, anything goes.
The latest entry into the X-Men film series was The New Mutants, and it was based on the comic book series of the same name. Though it had a competent foundation and an enviable cast including Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams, it didn't do very well at the box office. What's more is that critics thought that it hadn't made the most of its potential, something that Disney itself had said before the film got reshoots to bring it in line with director Josh Boone's original vision. In this rumoured reboot, it appears that Disney is turning over a new leaf for the characters and the comic book series, and it's possible that the X-Men will finally integrate into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Illuminerdi claims that the project is titled "The Mutants," though it does state that details are appreciably light on the ground at the moment. I think that's a little too close to The New Mutants, but hey, I'm not at the helm of a multi-billion mass media and entertainment conglomerate. They know what they're doing. It's also probable that the title is a placeholder until the project is formalised, and we likely won't hear anything concrete for a few years.
"You know how much I love the X-Men. I already said that's where I started," said Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, in an interview with Screen Rant. "I can't tell you anything before we actually announced it, but rest assured, the discussions have been long and ongoing internally." We'll keep you in the loop as and when we know more.
